Technology

Choosing a technology stack you will not regret

Most mainstream technology choices can deliver your product. The differences that matter show up in year two: who can maintain it, what it costs to run, and how quickly a new developer becomes useful.

Judge on maintenance, not launch

  • How easily can you hire for it in the UK market?
  • Is it actively maintained with a predictable upgrade path?
  • What does it cost to host at your expected scale?
  • How long does onboarding a new developer take?

Match the tool to the problem

Content-led sites, transactional products and data-heavy platforms have genuinely different needs. A stack that suits one can be a poor fit for another, so the choice should follow the product's shape rather than a house preference.

Keep the exits open

Keep business rules separate from framework details, avoid spreading vendor-specific features through the codebase, and prefer boring, documented boundaries. That is what makes a future change affordable.

Questions

Questions this raises

Should we use the newest framework?
Only when it solves a real problem you have. New tools bring smaller hiring pools and more churn, which you pay for in maintenance.
Who should own the decision?
Whoever will maintain the product long term. If that is your team, their experience should carry more weight than a supplier's preference.
