Cloud hosting costs, explained without the jargon
Hosting a normal business application is usually inexpensive. Bills become alarming when architecture choices create costs that grow with something other than customers.

What you actually pay for
- Compute: how much runs, and how much of it runs constantly
- Database: size, connections and whether it stays available around the clock
- Storage and transfer: data leaving the platform is often the surprise line
- Managed services: convenience you pay for per request or per hour
Where surprise costs come from
Common culprits are chatty integrations that call paid services in a loop, logs retained forever, unused environments left running, and images or files served straight from storage instead of a cache.
None of these are hard to fix once visible, which is why cost monitoring belongs in the build rather than after the first big bill.
Keeping it predictable
Set a budget alert on day one, size environments for their real load, and review spend monthly against usage. If cost per customer falls as you grow, the architecture is doing its job.
