Custom software vs off-the-shelf tools: how to decide
Off-the-shelf software is cheaper until you are working around it. Custom software is more expensive until it removes work every day. The decision is about where your advantage actually comes from.

Start with what makes you different
Buy the parts of your business that look like everyone else's: accounting, email, payroll, basic scheduling. Build the parts that are genuinely yours — the process customers notice and competitors cannot copy from a product page.
The hidden costs on both sides
- Off-the-shelf: per-seat pricing as you grow, paid add-ons, manual workarounds, and data trapped in one supplier.
- Custom: discovery and design time, hosting, and ownership of maintenance and support.
The test we use
Count the hours your team spends each month working around your current tool — re-entering data, keeping spreadsheets alongside it, fixing mistakes. Put a cost on those hours. If it rivals a build over two years, custom is worth pricing properly.
The middle option
Most of our work is neither extreme: keep the products that work, and build a small custom layer that joins them together and handles your specific rules. It is the cheapest route to something that fits.
